Our lives,in the cosmic scale, are but a speck in the vast ocean;our journey aims toward theoceans of stars. The motto of Shanghai Medical University, where Ionce studied,is ”Uphold integrity with-out seeking personal gain, illuminate the path without counting achievements.”This originatesfrom the words of Dong Zhongshu,a great Confucian scholar of the Western Han Dynasty:”Uphold righteousness without seeking personal profit, illuminate the path without countingcontributions.”Zhu Xi,a Neo-Confucian philosopher of the Southern Song Dynasty, alsoadopted this as the academic rule for the White Deer Grotto Academy, essential for scholars incultivating their character. After the millennium, the merger of Shanghai Medical Universitywith Fudan University infused us with the spirit of“extensive learning, resolute determination, critical questioning, and reflective thinking.”The essence of these two mottos converges in“pursuing, understanding, and being true to the Way.”The more challenging the path, thestronger the conviction in understanding it.Scholars,in their quest for knowledge, must besincerely devoted and dedicated.Only those who pursue this earnestly can master the art oflearning. In 2008,under the direction of my mentor,Prof.ZHOU Liangfu,we began to establish asubspecialty team for glioma, commonly known as ”brain cancer,”a malignant tumor thatremains a formidable challenge to overcome.Surgery is the first step in the individualizedcomprehensive treatment of glioma and is crucial in determining the patient’s prognosis.Toachieve the fundamental surgical objective of”maximum safe resection,”we gradually devel-oped a precision surgical system for brain tumors.During this period,we received support andguidance from international colleagues like Dr.Mitchel S.Berger,Dr.Hugues Duffau,Dr.Roger Stupp,Dr.Edward Chang,Dr.Ian F.Parney, and Dr.George Samandouras.Anatomy isone of the cornerstones of the development of surgery. While integrating various innovativetechnologies, the perfection of the traditional neuroanatomical knowledge system has playeda vital role in enhancing the quality of our surgeries. We must express our gratitude toDr.Evandro de Oliveira and his team of anatomy course instructors(Dr.Hung Tzu Wen,Dr.Paulo Kadri,Dr.Vicent Quilis Quesada,Dr.Niklaus Krayenbuhl,Dr.Sanford Chu,Dr.Shao Ching Chen,Dr.Chun Fu Lin,etc.),Dr.Roberto Rubio, and Dr.Guiheme CarvalhalRibas and Dr.Eduardo S.Carvalhal Ribas father and son. Todays society is at a technological singularity where productive forces are exploding, andvarious innovative technologies are emerging continuously.Once a diagnostic and therapeutictechnology system for a disease matures,it quickly enters a state of entropy increase.Thismeans that new theories and technologies from outside the system are knocking on the door, whether we like it or not. These external forces continuously deconstruct, rebuild, and elevatethe existing system. This brings forth a metaphysical question:as surgeons, traditionally in aprofession of relative stability, how do we face the challenges of this new era?Innovation is thetrend, the driving force, the oceans of stars;upholding principles is the origin, the foundation, the cultural heritage.Upholding principles while innovating is our fundamental attitude in fac-ing the challenges of the new era.We must neither be complacent nor superficially observe. We,the people of an era, must uphold the responsibilities of our time.No technology is eter-nal;what we can do is to infuse the truths we have experienced into our writings. We hope thatin 10,20,50 years, this book will still enlighten and serve as a reference for the next generationof neurosurgeons. This book is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the basic theoretical systemrelated to precision surgery for gliomas, and the second part presents 29representative classicsurgical teaching cases of cerebral hemisphere gliomas.Forty-five doctors of various levelsfrom our team have jointly written this book.Every chapter, every surgical case, encapsulatesthe teams personal experiences, painstaking efforts, and dedication. The compilation of thismanuscript was delayed more than expected, taking over five years in total.Every team mem-ber shared their efforts, perseverance, perspectives, thoughts, dedication, and gains. The pub-lication of this book is proof of a career we have no regrets about. During the compilation of this book,Dr.CHEN Hong provided the histopathological pho-tos for each surgical teaching case, and Dr.WANG Peng prepared and photographed eachanatomical specimen.Blessing Medical Illustration Media (blessing16@126.com)assignedthe talented illustrator Mi Yang to work closely with us.Together,we completed the creationof 381 medical illustrations and the annotation of anatomical images, and also participated inthe proofreading of the proofs. The English version of this book greatly benefited from theassistance of Dr.N.U.Farrukh Hameed (Li Yan)and medical translator Natalia ZHOU Linghui.Dr.N.U.Farrukh Hameed also contributed to recording English narrations for multiple surgi-cal videos. We are grateful for the publication of this book, which was supported by the \NationalScience and Technology Academic Works Publishing Fund Project.” We earnestly request readers to approach what they read with sincerity to tolerate possibleerrors,to recognize that the writings may not be perfect, and that the theories are open fordiscussion.Every piece of feedback from readers is extremely valuable.
